Training in Pakistan
I spent 5 days running special needs awareness course for the Beacon House School system in Lahore. Beacon House is an independent franchise of schools providing education in Pakistan and in seven other countries across the world. The schools have been encountering the familiar challenges of including some children with special and specific needs .The delegates were an enthusiastic group of 25 who were responsible for training staff, curriculum coordinators and advising on teaching and learning in their local areas.
I was struck by how similar the issues they were raising to the concerns of teachers and schools all over the UK. There was much animated debate on the limits and possibilities of inclusion, the need for better differentiated practice and that good practice in teaching will support and develop all pupils and not just those with SEN
The programme covered awareness of Autistic spectrum conditions, ADHD , Dyslexia .There were two further days training on enhanced differentiation and developing the role of the SENCO. The course suggested practical strategies to provide a structured and effective education for all students in a main stream setting.
The fact that these issues were universal and crossed every frontier of culture, religion economics and ethnicity was clear and comforting that what unites the people of the world is the endeavour to improve another person’s quality of life
My hosts in Lahore could not have been more hospitable and provided me with excellent standards of accommodation, which was not only very comfortable but was also safe and secure. I did manage to see some of the historic city in the evenings and was well guided through the local delicacies and especially through the traffic.
My impressions of Pakistan will remain with me as it is a fascinating country of contrasts from one street corner of modern buildings and facilities then to another of a whole family of 5 being transported on a small motorbike. The heat at this time of year can rise to 42-45c and some of the curried food is of similar heat. The warmest memory is of the enthusiasm, and hospitality of my hosts and delegates.
Everyone I met was concerned that I would share these positive images and memories of Pakistan during these troubled times.
