CTT7 - Positive Behaviour Management

Special Needs

This course looks at practical strategies for working with  children who display challenging and disruptive behaviours in a positive and structured way. The course will offer opportunities to develop personalised behaviour plans, explore positive use of language and body language. This course is suitable for staff working with all areas of SEN.

The course will cover:

  • understanding behaviour
  • positive communication skills
  • assessing and planning intervention
  • personalised planning and intervention.

CTT8 - Differentiating the curriculum for pupils with Social Emotional and Behavioural Needs

As special schools become more generic in nature so the needs of their students become more diverse and challenging. Often students with very different needs are taught in the same classroom and demand a highly differentiated approach.  This course will look at the need of students with SEBD and how to structure teaching and manage challenging behaviour.

The course will cover:

  • the needs of the learners
  • structured teaching
  • building self esteem
  • positive behaviour management.

CTT9 - Supporting children with a complex profile

More and more children are presenting with a complex profile and a non-specific diagnosis. This course will find a direction through the complexities of co-morbid conditions and suggest strategies for creating individual plans for effective teaching and learning and behaviour management.

The course will cover:

  • understanding complex profiles (ASD, ADHD, PDD, Semantic/Pragmatic Disorders, Attachment Disorders)
  • separating core issues and associated characteristics
  • working with case studies
  • personalised planning
  • structured interventions
  • recording progress.

CTT10 - Whole person communication

This course is suitable for teachers and support staff who work with  children who have Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities, ASD  with severe communication difficulties. This course is also suitable for care staff, parents and carers living and working with children and adults with severe communication difficulties.

The course will draw upon Intensive Interaction, Sherbourne Movement techniques, play and drama techniques to explore whole person techniques of communicating and connecting with children and adults with profound communication needs.

The course will cover:

  • exploring the communication needs of people with profound communication difficulties
  • identifying the difference between functional and emotional communication
  • how to use and develop communication techniques based on Intensive Interaction and Sherbourne Movement
  • using drama and play techniques to develop communication and social skills
  • planning, recording and observion techniques.

N.B. Please note this course will not cover whole body signing.

CTT11 - Understanding attachment disorders

Suitable for teachers, support staff, pastoral staff, care staff, foster carers working with young people with attachment disorders in special schools and main stream settings.

The course will cover:

  • the nature and characteristics of attachment disorders
  • how attachment issues affect behaviour, teaching and learning, relationship/social skills, and lifelong development
  • effective management strategies to develop social skills, communication skills and behaviour management
  • case studies and planning  individual support and intervention.
